2. Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishments, contributions, or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?
Response 1:
I will be the first in my family to graduate from high school and pursue a higher education. I come from a world that believes that struggle and hard work make dreams come true. My parents both immigrated from Mexico to create a better life for myself and my siblings. I've seen how much my parents have had to sacrifice and I've seen how much harder they have worked because they didn’t have the choice of opportunity or a formal education. My dad and mom are both from Salamanca Guanajuato Mexico. He dropped out of school in the third grade so that he could work and support his family there in Mexico. He was raised in a humble town where his family owned a small convenience store located in their home. The money from the store needed to stretch enough to buy food for the family and other necessities. My mom is from a town close to where my dad grew up. As a child my mom did not struggle as much as my dad, and his family. But she still had to work so that she could give back to her family as well. Her strong work ethic at a young age showed me that hard work pays off.
Although my parents didn’t become a doctors or lawyers, they became teachers to me. They've taught me right from wrong and let me stumble and fall so that I could learn from my mistakes. As a result of my parents lack of education, we have struggled financially at times, but my dad has always found a way to make ends meet. My father instilled in me the value of education and that a college degree is the path towards prosperity and away from poverty.
The obstacles my parents overcame encouraged me to invest in my education and seek out bigger opportunities. Instead of attending my school of residence, I chose to attend a small, public college preparatory high school. The requirements at Sacramento New Technology High School are greater than any other traditional high school. I view these requirements as opportunities. New Tech provided me the chance to enroll at Sacramento City College and take classes as an Advanced Education Student. I completed an internship at City Hall and invested in my community by completing over 100 service hours. While my neighborhood peers struggle to meet the 225 credit requirement for graduation, I will have slightly over 260 credits upon graduating from New Tech.
Choosing a high school where I am supported, inspired, and have been successful has brought me closer to my goals of higher education and a career in law. I am passionate about pursuing immigration law. I come from an immigrant family that believes that the American Dream is alive and well and this has inspired me to help other families. As a lawyer I want to help my own family and be a leader in the community. I am thankful for my family and the endless support they have given me; everything I have accomplished and will accomplish is for them. I will take advantage of my education so that I can reach my goals and hopefully open new opportunities for me that will lead to a better future for my family.
Response 2:
Throughout my high school career, Student Government has been both an experience and accomplishment for me. Being a student leader at Sacramento New Technology High School is highly valued due to our small community and the importance of maintaining a school culture of trust, respect and responsibility. Being elected ASB Vice President my junior year defined who I am as a person. The position of Vice President was the gateway to many new accomplishments and advantages, as well as a lot more responsibility. Through this opportunity I discovered my strongest talents: leading and public speaking. I became more involved in school and became a role model to both my peers and the underclassmen.
I am most proud of this accomplishment because I became a leader and I contributed to making my school a better place for the student body. I did this by coordinating our new student welcome and orientation activities, setting academic policy in collaboration with staff, and fundraising to support student activities. I enjoyed all that came with the role of being Vice President so much that I decided to run for President at the end of my junior year. I was willing to serve my student body and accept all the challenges that came with the role.
Due to my work ethic and passion for student leadership, my peers elected me as the ASB President. Part of my role is to be the voice of the student body and to make sure the roots of our school culture remain alive within us. An additional requirement of this role is to be a member of the school advisory board. As a member, I help to ensure that our school is following the requirements of our charter and I help make decisions that impact the school. These opportunities have provided me with new knowledge and have taught me with managing my time.
These experiences have been life changing. I became the type of person I thought I could never be. I have become a confident, mature young leader. Before attending New Tech I was very soft spoken and shy. I could not stand and speak in front of crowds of people. I would have much rathered stay quiet, because I feared rejection and humiliation. With time that fear went away: I was speaking in front of teachers and students without hesitation. My talents have made me a role model and unfearful of the future. I have people who look up to me and learn from me. I am proud of where my experiences and accomplishments have brought me in life, because they have made me the person I am today.
